Day 211 Mile 211: Beano Day. 79 years ago on this very day the first issue of The Beano was published, and it’s still going, making it the longest running British children’s comic! As a result I went running off down the road in my Dennis the Menace t-shirt starting off by the Police station and ending up at the sweet shop!
In 2004 a first edition of The Beano comic was sold for a record-breaking £12,100 at auction. It was the most ever paid for a British comic, and this copy is only one of 12 Beano first editions around. The man who owned it worked as a tea boy at the time for D. C. Thomson (the company that published it) and bought it for “tuppence”. He had even written “Keep first issue” on the cover in pencil in 1938 and the comic was kept safe in his family since then.
For me The Beano is one of those quirks that makes up part of a cultural identity that you don’t even notice. I must have cumulatively spent weeks of my childhood reading these wonderfully drawn and crafted stories. In these days of changing norms and political correctness some of the older editions might start to be frowned upon but what shines through all of them is the real value of fun and friendship!
I’m running a mile each day everyday for 2017. If you feel you can sponsor me please do, as all the money raised will go to the Cleft Lip & Palate Association (CLAPA) who provide services all across the UK to support people affected by it.
Distance: 1630.9 meters recorded
(1 mile = 1609.34 m.)
Thanks as ever for all the support!
