Day 75 mile 75: Day of the Book Smugglers

Day 75 mile 75: Day of the Book Smugglers. In Lithuania the Russian Empire banned Lithuanian language books printed in the Latin alphabet from 1864 to 1904. As such March 16th is remembered in Lithuania as Knygnešio diena (Day of the Book Smugglers) in honor of the brave people who risked imprisonment, deportation and execution to keep their culture alive.

img_9671In order to help continue this memory, I put some books (including a few written in Welsh) into a rucksack and ran around the village, making certain to use the (not so secret) tunnel which runs under the quarry conveyor belts, and looping back past the library.

I can think of lighter things to smuggle!

On a random aside I saw my first bumble bee of the year today, a sure sign that the seasons are changing 🙂

Thanks as ever for all the support.

Ed
