Day 16 mile 16: Trail run, Ogwen cottage to Llyn Idwal and back.
This is a run which I have wanted to do for ages but have not really had the opportunity/levels of fitness! It would have been wonderful to be able to show some pristine photos of the area as it is truly incredible but sadly given my luck it was low cloud, mist and rain…
However, it is still an amazing place, and a google search will bring up 1000s of pretty pictures of the area, but they will miss the point of today.
The muted light seems to ramp up the restricted palate of the area, and you are assaulted by a wash of textures and colour as the verdant ochres, yellows and peppers of rock, water, mud, moss and grass flow past. This is punctuated by the granularity of volcanic rock, the crystalline sponginess of moss and the slick of wet earth occasionally coursed through with the blues and oranges of minerals leached out of the earth a peat. The low cloud, and the absolute silence of the wind, left nothing but running water, breathing and footfall to hear; and the occasional “Hello” of brightly cagouled winter-walkers was the only other sign of life.
The relatively steep gradient and broken ground lead to a time that feels incredibly slow by road running standards, but I don’t mind. It was different, and fun and great for the soul 🙂
On another note, thanks to everyone who has donated so far, especially if you donated since yesterday and I haven’t had the chance to say so yet. Many thanks!
